Pokémon Conquer the Gauntlet is a Pokémon Essentials competition game where it's you vs the best of the best, in a tournament for the ages! Go through nine large and diverse areas! Collect Pokémon! Battle other Gauntlet Runners! And challenge the Warden of the stage to advance to the next Trial. Each of the nine Trials in the Gauntlet will have a different overarching theme, and have thematic bosses that use the culminations of that area’s 'mons.

The main story of the game is a tournament, a best of the best where you are faced against 500 other trainers to run, battle, and conquer all in the hopes of making it to the end, and earning your prize. You wake up in a truck and are thrust into the games, and with no other way out, you'll have to battle your way through. You will have to beat many of them, and if you lose too much, you're out. That's not to mention the fact that something of a gang is forming amongst the contenders, and they seem to have it out for you in particular.

DOWNLOAD

We have all Pokémon from the first 6 generations implemented, as well as their newer babies and evolved forms (totalling a whopping 736 Pokémon), and MEGA EVOLUTIONS (even those from Legends ZA).

We are using Gen-5 style animated sprites in-battle, too!

There are HGSS overworld following Pokémon.

AND a single/double battle switch where you can decide how you play through the game.

Reaching the end of the 9th stage results in a tournament of the top 16 contestants.

Then, the winner of the tournament fights the mysterious champion of the games before being crowned the victor.

The goal is for the game to be a fun and rewarding experience for new and veteran players, where you advance from a regular player running through with no items, 4 high power attacking moves, random nature, IVs and EVs, to a competitive mindset where you start to formulate genuine strategies in order to win.

You can completely customize your Pokémon, so that way you always have the best sets for your battles!

  • Instantly level up your Pokémon to your level cap by interacting with the Rhydon Statues around the Gauntlet. (Usually by the doors to a Warden Chamber)
  • Out of Battle Items to SKIP MANDATORY TMs!
  • Speak with NPCs to set Happiness, organize your boxes, and get exclusive items!
  • Heal anywhere with the Sleeping Bag!
  • See types in battle with the display beside their names!
  • Check type matchups with the symbols beside each of your moves!
  • And more!

The difficulty of the hack will be moderate to high, but very possible with the tools before you.

And you can even spray paint your Pokémon to make them shiny!

The average time to beat is 16 hours, with time to 100% being somewhere around 30.

Expect updates to fix bugs that are noticed (there shouldn’t be many, it was heavily tested), but the game is considered complete.

Enjoy!

DOWNLOAD

There is a Walkthrough included in the "Docs" folder.

This contains wild Pokémon locations, trainer teams, mechanical changes, what's in the game and what's not. It's got all the same info as this page, and MORE!

PC (Windows 10+):

7/8 should be fine, but I have only ever tested on 10 and 11.
Step 1: Download the game.

  • Great! If you have this guide, you’ve done it!
Step 2: Click “Game.exe”.

  • Amazing! It just works!™

Android:

Everything from 2017 and newer, that is running Android 8 (Oreo) or newer, should be fine.
Step 1: Uninstall Joiplay and RPGMaker (if already installed).

  • CTG does not use the latest versions of these applications, so you need to uninstall them if you want the game to work. Installing them over a pre-existing version WILL NOT WORK.
  • Most people will have the installation fail because they skip this step. DO NOT IGNORE IT.
    • Go to Settings -> Apps -> Joiplay -> Uninstall
    • Go to Settings -> Apps -> RPG Maker -> Uninstall
  • We use the same versions as Infinite Fusion. So, if you have those versions, you can also skip this step as those versions are proven to work just fine for CTG.
Step 2: Install the 2 APKs from the ‘Installation’ Folder.

  • Extract the files from the zip and run them.
    • Run Joiplay first.
    • Then, RPG Maker second.
Step 3: Add the EXE to your Joiplay.

  • Open the Joiplay app.
  • Click the plus (+) symbol in the top right corner.
  • Then, click “Add Game”.
  • Then, navigate to where you have installed CTG.
  • And click on the “Game.exe” file.
  • The other questions after (name, icon, version number, etc) are self-explanatory, and largely optional. Leaving them blank will not break anything.

The only files to make sure you port between versions are your saves. Located at the base level, with the “Conquer the Gauntlet” folder, they are files “File A.rxdata” -> “File F.rxdata” Everything else is going to be removed.

  1. Copy, out of the “Conquer the Gauntlet” folder, your saves. Move them to a safe location.
    1. Ex. File A.rxdata
  2. Delete your current copy of “Conquer the Gauntlet”.
  3. Download and Extract the latest copy of the game into the same location it was before. Exact same directory level and location.
    1. You do not need to uninstall your app/plugin needed to run the game. Just remove the game itself to make way for the new copy.
  4. Copy, into the de-archived folder, your save games.
  5. Boot up the game as you did before to verify everything worked.

As a note, when updating, sometimes but not always, a new save should be made due to compatibility issues. Sorry for this, but I will let you know when such things happen.

Escape - Cancel

Z - Open / close menu
Left Shift - Open / close menu

S - Shift following Pokémon and party order

Left Shift (in-battle) - Use special actions (ex. mega evolve, add in a direction arrow to shift the arrangement of your Pokémon in a triple battle)

D - View and use registered Key Items

Q - Speed Up / Return to normal speed

FOLLOWING POKÉMON ARE IN THIS ROM HACK. (You can turn them off…)

Pokémon do NOT auto-evolve when they hit the level required. Instead, you must go into your party and click “Evolve” to get them to the next stage. (Eviolite & Everstones block the button from appearing)

SHINY ODDS are 1/512, with the Shiny Charm increasing those odds to 1/64. Some shinies (ex. Garchomp, Gengar) have been recolored.

The Move Relearner is accessible from the Party menu. You can also rename your Pokémon from there.

Note: Do not use the relearner INSIDE the Pokémon’s move screen, use the one on the party page to ensure that you see every option intended. Neither is broken, one just has more choices than the other.

In the options menu, you can decide if you want to play the game in Single Battle mode or Double Battle mode.
The default is Doubles!

The EXP ALL is given at the start of the game. You can turn it off, BUT there are level caps. The goal of this game is not to grind. It is to use your skills and time to beat the game, not waste your life on tedium. You can also interact with the Rhydon statues outside of the Warden Chambers to increase your whole party to your current level cap.

Since the goal was to eliminate grinding, I had to develop a brand new system:

On-Catch Customization!

When you capture a Pokémon, you get to decide the following: IVs and EVs (how and where they’re assigned), Nature & Ability.

But, to get out ahead of things,
if you desire to skip all of this, a simple Auto-Assign Stats option is there in the settings for you to enable which will take care of all of this for you. That option is off by default. But, the option remains for a player to perfect their Pokémon as they see fit, or to let the game handle that for them. The auto-assign feature is not flawless in its assignments, as in it will not do everything perfectly, and some basic checks/tweaking is recommended before the big fights to make sure everything is as you would like.

Gender is pre-determined, but no Pokémon is rarer than 5% in a given patch of grass, so finding the gender you want shouldn’t be too hard.

Nature and Ability are assigned on the same page. Nature is any from the list, there is a UI element telling you the effect so that you don’t have to Google the chart. And Ability choices are from ALL of a given Pokémon’s options, hidden included. The definitions are also provided.
IVs are assigned from a base budget for a given Pokémon’s species. Most species have a budget of 64 IV Points, legendaries and mythicals tend to have about 100.

EVs are assigned by a table. Depending on your Pokémon’s level, they will have a number of EV Points for you to assign. At level 1, you have 0. But, by Level 50, a Pokémon will have all of its EVs to assign as you desire.

EVs-Per-Level Assignment Table
LevelsGain per LevelTotal Points (Range)
2-71616-96
8-2912108-360
30-458368-488
46-504492-508

At any time after capture, a player can change around a Pokémon’s build; swapping IVs, EVs, Nature and Ability whenever they are not in a battle.

NEW MEGAS:

All Mega Evolutions (at time of release) are included. From Dragonite, to Starmie, Greninja, and beyond. That means even broken Megas like Heatran and Darkrai are IN!

Most of the PLZA mega forms have their base forms’ abilities, since Champions is still a ways away (Feb ‘26). Starmie was tweaked down to be +100 from base and given Huge Power. Other than that, just go based on what their normal forms have.

NEW ITEMS:

Shiny Spray:
New Consumable. Turn any Pokémon shiny!

Paint Remover: De-Shiny any Pokémon!

Power Pill: Increase a Pokémon’s IV budget (per the new customizer system) by 31! Steroids are legal in the Gauntlet!

Ability Suppressor: New Held Item. Instead of holding something with utility, you can shrug off a bad ability by holding this instead! Just turn off Slow Start or Truant, ignore it completely.

Master Candy: A new key item that levels up a Pokémon to the minimum needed to evolve to its final stage. Get it in the post-game to speed up catching them all.

NEW WEATHER:

Looming Moonlight:
Whilst under the effects of Looming Moonlight, Ghosts can hit Normal and Dark types for neutral damage. Additionally, Pokémon put to sleep whilst Looming Moonlight is active won’t wake until the moonlight fades!

MOVE CHANGES:

  • Cut is now Bug type and has a higher crit rate.
  • Dark Void restored to 80% Accuracy (Smeargle cannot learn it)
  • Tri-Attack reduced power to 30, but it now hits 3 times, each time it hits it has a 10% chance of applying the one-of-three status effect.
    • Charge Beam
    • Dual Chop
    • Rollout

There are NO:
  • Gens 7-9 Pokémon (Babies and New Evolutions to base forms ARE included)
    • Okayyy, I also put in a few Gen 9ers by request. :P
  • Regional Forms (Base Forms Only)
    • This means no Pokémon like Obstagoon either since they evolve from regional forms of other Pokémon. Overqwil and Sneasler were included though, as I couldn’t not include only select PLA evolutions, with the rest going in, they had to come as well.
  • Mandatory HMs (They are in the game as TMs, and there are items to obtain to avoid ever having to teach them to your Pokémon long-term)
    • You may have to temporarily teach them a TM for one area, but then immediately after you can use the move relearner function in your party to swap it back out.
  • PP Up & PP Max
    • I think Power Point assignments for moves were designed with intent, and therefore should not be able to be increased
  • Type-Boost Gems
    • These were a mistake and Game Freak realized this too.
  • X Items
    • I have a personal vendetta against these.
  • Mints, Feathers, & Vitamins
    • You can assign your Nature, IVs, and EVs at-will.
  • Ability Patches & Capsules
    • You can assign your Ability at-will.
  • Failing to run from wild Pokémon
    • This is stupid, Ironmon pivoting should not end your run.
  • Failing to catch wild Pokémon. There is only 1 kind of ball in the Gauntlet, and it never fails.
    • Catch what you want, don’t waste time watching your balls roll around on the ground.
  • Lost-On-Use Triggers (EX. Air Balloon does not vanish after being used)
    • All items, even berries, will be returned to your Pokémon after a battle is finished.
  • Breeding. (All egg moves are level 1 move options)
    • Doesn’t need to be in the game, so I cut it.
  • Stupid evolution methods, everything is level up, item, or stone-based. No more friendship, time-based, or trade evolutions.
    • Check the list to see what’s new!
  • Z-Moves
    • Broken, over-powered nonsense.
  • Dynamaxing
    • Too stall-focused.
  • Terastalizing
    • I hate hats.
