Pokémon Forecast

Made using Pokémon Essentials v21.1

Overview:
In Pokémon Forecast, you take on the role of a young astronomer, fresh out of graduate school, returning to a lab high in the mountains you once worked at before.
The Gran Xatu Lab, a weather station, observatory, and seismic monitoring facility, is abuzz with energy as it prepares for the Pokémon Grand Prix, an upcoming traveling tournament.
You want nothing more than to settle into your work and bask in the beautiful scenery... but fate has other plans!
Accompanied by your trusty Starmie, a mysterious Castform, and if you're lucky, a couple other friends, you'll have to fight to survive as the lab descends into a weather-based chaos!
Of course, you'll also have to deal with communitarian scientists, sleep-deprived engineers, zealous security guards, and the mysterious Clean Room...
It can't all be harder than a PhD, right...?

Features:
  • 1-2 hours of gameplay
  • 4 brand-new Castforms
  • 3 brand-new weather conditions: Oppressive Darkness, Acid Rain, and CLEAN
  • A whopping 4 obtainable Pokémon (explore to find some of them!)
  • A goofy, chaotic story exploring the facets of a modern laboratory
  • Funny and strange NPCs and flavor text galore: talking to them is the game
  • Including Generation 9 Pokémon and mechanics
  • DemICE's adjustable EV system - use it from the summary menu!
  • Speedup with Q
  • Instant text with the cancel button
  • A "FRLG+" graphical style
  • Awesome music from games that Foxowl likes

Team:
@Foxowl : Making the Game!
@Ekat : Playtesting and feedback!

Notes:
Wow, it's literally been 3000 5 years since I completed a game! This was somewhat unexpected, especially as I only decided to join the jam 2 weeks in. For only having ~four weeks to work on this, I'm pretty happy with the result. I didn't have to cut many of my ideas and I was pretty satisfied with the execution of most of them. I also feel like I've improved a lot in terms of tiles, spriting, and eventing since A Slice of Life.
That said, I must warn that this game may be a little over-silly and irreverent. There are perhaps too many references to my previous game, and I got really exhausted working on the last section of the game due to the fact that I was traveling essentially every single day during the first week of August. I had an incredible opportunity to work at a physics lab in the mountains this past summer, and so I would say this game is in some ways a journal of my experience. The setting and many of the gags are inspired by my thoughts, opinions, and kneejerk emotions from working at such a confusing and bureaucratic, but also fundamentally awesome place. Of course, I have to also thank Ekat for helping with an extremely last minute playtest! Your feedback is always invaluable!
Please take your time and talk to everyone and everything in this game, for my sake! Enjoy!!!

Hey! A couple of days ago, I played this game, so I'm reporting my feedback and overall thoughts!

Story:
  • The dialogue throughout the game was so freaking charming. The way that you have people talk just has this great feel to it, and it was fun to play the game with other people and mess around with the dialogue that you wrote for it!
  • However, as you mentioned near the end of the game, once you get into the gameplay it felt like the game got a little confused on what it was supposed to be, and I got very confused on when it ended, as there were many moments I kept thinking: "Ah, THIS will be the last battle!" But then the game kept going.
  • I think one of the reasons why the story may feel lost at times is because of all the different factions you go through over and over again, which all feel like their "bad guys" when you go through them. First, there's the underground faction that you're going against, but then you have to deal with the Clean Room. That's fine, as the underground people didn't feel that final, and you were set up for the Clean Room earlier on in the game. However, with the amount of content in the Clean Room and how difficult King George was, I was sure in my head that it was the final boss. Not to mention the game is kind of leading you on to believe he's in charge of the weather going crazy, due to this, it made the ending feel like it was dragging, and was a little scared to hit that final note of the song.

Gameplay:
  • I felt wanting through a lot of the game, some more creativity when it came to the puzzles, as the puzzles that existed in the game were just reskins of official puzzles through Pokémon. I think the Clean Room lends itself to a lot of really cool ideas, and it would've been really cool and made it stand out more if there were some unique gameplay puzzles to go along with such a unique area.
  • The balancing of the battles felt a little inconsistent, as the game flings you between battles that are designed for you to be able to breeze through straight into a battle designed to be hard for you. There weren't many battles that hit the sweet spot of being challenging without feeling like it was made to be directly against you.
  • I wish there were a way to get more Pokémon outside the three you could get, as it made it hard to deal with some of the fights, especially later on.
  • Speaking of later on, the last couple of boss fights against King George and your coworker, I found them to be a little unfair. It didn't help with the King George fight that type effectiveness didn't impact your battle, so it devolved into a fight entirely about whose numbers were bigger. On top of that, there were some Pokémon in his fight that felt hard to beat; he would just continually beat me up over and over without really giving me much opportunity to do anything.
  • What made the fight even harder is that you can't go back and prepare better by getting items or more Pokémon to be able to do better against him next time, as the game doesn't give you any opportunities to get these things to help aid you in the battle. Due to these factors, I think it took me around an hour to finally be able to defeat King George.

Final Thoughts:

  • Overall, it was a polished game with some very unique locations and aesthetics. However, I felt like some of the balancing was a bit unfair with a lot of the fights, and I would've loved to see you come up with some unique puzzles for such a cool place like the Clean Room. The polish continued to show itself through the writing and eventing, but the plot this dialogue was trying to show felt more and more unsure of itself as the story progressed. It's cool that you were able to release something so polished for the jam! A lot of these problems probably come down to not having as much time with the jam since you started a couple of weeks in. I look forward to seeing if you release anything else in the future, and I hope more people are able to enjoy your really fun dialogue!

It's cool that you were able to release something so polished for the jam! A lot of these problems probably come down to not having as much time with the jam since you started a couple of weeks in. I would suggest to try and limit some of these problems, is to try and plan even more before jumping into the game, as I find that step to be the most important when it comes to making a project. I look forward to seeing if you release anything else in the future, and I hope more people are able to enjoy your really fun dialogue!
Hey, thanks for playing and even more thanks for leaving feedback! I figure I'd respond to a few things here:
In terms of the stories, being continually misled about who is actually behind the chaos is intended. Maybe it didn't land, but you are supposed to think George + Clean Man are the final bosses, when it's actually just cover for Andre being the real manipulator the entire time. Maybe I should have added more hints that everything wasn't as it seemed, though.
In terms of adding new puzzles, that's completely fair--I would chalk it up to being a time and manpower limitation over anything else. I don't have a ton of original puzzle-programming experience and it was never really my goal with the game. I also felt like the typically-ice related puzzles that exist in Pokemon fit well for the theming of the Clean Room. If I could have made the Underground more puzzle-y I would have, though.
Yeah, the balancing is definitely off in a few places, although I will note that there is actually a fourth Pokemon you can obtain in Hall HH of the Underground (north of Hall H). One of the things I'm mixed on with the game is the fact that 2/4 of the obtainable Pokemon are completely optional.
For what it's worth, I did plan out the overall structure of the game ahead of time, while my actual workflow tends to be very spontaneous as that's when I feel my best ideas come out, but with two more weeks I'm sure it would have been more airtight. Regardless, thanks for the feedback!

Updated the game to v1.1 -- thanks for all the feedback I've been receiving!

Changelog (v.1.1):
-Fixed a crash when talking to Excadrill in the Underground
-Fixed the effectiveness of Freeze-Dry in a certain weather condition
-Fixed a bug where the Acid Rain overworld weather was not causing the correct battle weather to be active
-Fixed a bug where panoramas were not moving in certain maps
-Changed the color of the text in the battle UI to be more readable
-Added some rare candies as an item to be found
-Added several TMs in the Clean Room: Earth Power, Sludge Bomb
-Replaced the Air Slash TM with Giga Drain
-Added dialogue to hint at the location of the fourth obtainable Pokémon better
-Slightly tweaked the teams of certain boss battles to hopefully make them easier, mostly removing moves and changing some levels
-Added a message at the start of the game to inform the player about certain features
-Added a line of dialogue to remind the player of a certain story detail

The main goal besides fixing some of these annoying little bugs was to somewhat rebalance the game to be easier. I didn't expect it to be as hard as some people are saying. Hopefully the changes I've made allow for more player options and flexibility. I would like to reiterate that there are four available Pokémon, but two of them are optional, so you will have to explore (a little) to find them. If you want to just know where they all are, though, here you go:

Starmie ("Pulsar") - Available upon game start.
Castform ("Moleculio") - Obtained during the story.
Applin - Can be found wandering in the lobby during the darkness section. The trash can nearby contains the three apples that will let you evolve Applin into either Appletun, Flapple, or Dipplin. The TM for Dragon Cheer is available in the Clean Room, allowing you to evolve Dipplin into Hydrapple upon level up while knowing that move.
Tauros-Paldea (Combat Breed) - Obtained by speaking to the NPC in Hall HH, north of Hall H.

This was an absolute blast of 2 and a half hours, but I didn't expect less from you, considering how good A Slice of Life was XD

Before anything, this game was absolutely gorgeous. The tiles are pleasing to the eye and I genuinely love how the sky looks with the Drifloon floating past.

But what takes the cake is the humour. I love how quirky and entertaining every single character was. The power trip his holiness went on was one of the best scenes in the game XD Thought my favorite character is the con artist lesbians who convinced everyone one of them is a psychic so they can spend time together during work, life goals <3

I also love how Sonia uses her man to form a MAZE, Being accused broke my heart(but you know, I'm gonna forgive her and join in on her underground civilization), but she is incredible XD (the fact the maze 'walls' watch is terrifying btw, it genuinely spiked my anxiety lol)

Ngl, being called 'Your holiness' is terrible for my ego, I would be blessing people left and right during that honor walk in-game. I would be showing up to work in blood red robes under jet black armor, and give people year-long bans if they didn't bow when they saw me. I would be terrible. Our character is better than me XD

One thing tho: I am extremely disappointed and saddened that after receiving our title we don't have a halo around our head...

Jokes aside, a clean room is a very unique concept! An environment where types are meaningless is extremely interesting, I immensely enjoyed nailing a Mr. Mime with dragon-type moves too XD

The final conversation felt strangely real; it had such a somber air to it, even if it was so short. Pizza Corp is ruining lives as usual, but man, our redhead isn't innocent either, is he?

10 outta 10 game, there is not one single sane character here, the security guards are unironically a cult and I felt like the child of that one divorced couple in the clean room, loved it <3

Side note: IS THAT TRUFFLES FROM ASHEN FROST????? I am a massive fan of the game(genuinely my top 1 that's how much I love it), I got so excited XD

Super fun game, I don't really have anything hyper specific to say so I won't bother with a spoiler marker. I don't have anything to complain about the game, in my experience the balance was good and fine but I can see how it could end up a bit rough depending on how you play. The game was gorgeous throughout, even just the outside area of the lab was such a vibe. I want to spend a summer doing an internship at that lab, it's beautiful. And the night sky graphic, feels like a beautiful kind of anchor to the story. The writing was the highlight for me, I really like your style of writing and comedy, and this is defs one of the funniest fangames I've played. I know this game was a rush to get finished but I hope you're proud, because it came out very nicely.
