Pokémon Shifting Skies

Overview
QXNLHIG.png

one world, four seasons

You play as Geoffrey, a devoted father living in the peaceful village of Evergreen Hollow.
After a fateful encounter between your Castform and a furious mother Ursaring, you’re enlisted by two of the village's scientists to test the capabilities of a revolutionary new invention of theirs : the ChronoBarometer.
But the deeper you investigate, the clearer it becomes that Evergreen Hollow and its surroundings aren't as tranquil as they first seem.
Ancient forces are stirring, secrets are unraveling, and the skies themselves may not remain peaceful forever...
Can Geoffrey protect his home and family while navigating the dangers he never asked for?

Developer notes
My first ever game with an actual public release version! Quite happy with how the final game has turned out but there were multiple points of scaling back scope and adjusting the story during development. Having worked together multiple times before we knew we'd be able to get something good out before the deadline but having never been Lead Developer myself before I now understand the pain a bit better! Hopefully people enjoy the exploration aspect without it feeling quite as open as our previous project, Pokémon Peppermint. I'm particularly happy with how the cutscenes came out, so I'm looking forward to hearing people's thoughts on those!
Sorry WolfTaiko, you might not like this one, again!

How the mechanics work (major spoilers)
  • Pokémon that usually evolve by level evolve by defeating x amount of Pokémon, e.g. Hoothoot evolves after 20 victories. Victories count for every Pokémon in your party at the time.
  • Pokémon's moves evolve by being used x times, with each move having defined evolution paths, e.g. Rock Throw -> Rock Tomb -> Rock Slide -> Stone Edge (this progress is constant across a given move for all Pokémon). Progress is indicated by the green circle besides moves in the summary menu. Some moves with no evolution path will always show a fully completed circle.
  • For the first year, seasons can only be progressed after winning 5 trainer battles (to prevent spamming). After a full cycle, the season can be progressed whenever you like.
  • Berries planted in any Season take 3 season progressions to fully grow, after 4 seasons progressions it will have withered away.
  • "Seeds" planted by cliffs will grow into a climbable vine on progression from Spring to Summer, otherwise they rot. Once grown, vines remain forever. Seeds can be obtained from harvesting berries (50% chance).
  • Berry Traps can be filled with berries in any season, but will only trap a Pokémon in Autumn. Encounter list for traps is the same as each route (shown on the map) but with an even chance for any encounter, making usually rare encounters more likely. The type of berry put in the trap will affect the nature of the trapped Pokémon (matches the liked flavour, e.g. Chesto = Dry = Modest) except for Enigma berries which affect the ability.
  • Boulders within hibernation caves can only be interacted with during Winter. Encounter lists are custom for each boulder, and some may contain exceedingly rare Pokémon...
  • Water can be fished in during Summer, Spring or Autumn, and freezes over in Winter allowing you to skate over it.
  • Pokémon gain +10% to all stats in their preferred season.

v0.1.1 now released with a couple crashes fixed and some balance changes, please redownload if you have already started!

Just finished playing! I like this game a lot! It's meaty! The systems are really cool and unique! and it's fun!
Some thoughts
I really did like this game a lot, it feels fun in a similar way to Peppermint, but it's a whole new set of interesting systems. The affinities, the move learning, the environment changing, the achievements, the skills. It's all really fun to interact with and makes the whole team building feel new and refreshing.

I don't know if it's intentional, but I feel like this game had 3 "acts" that all played kind of differently. This is just an observation, but it was kind of interesting. The start felt mainly cutscene focused, it had a lot of charm and was a nice intro to the game. But I was sad to say goodbye to my castform :(
Then the game was mostly a gauntlet of trainers and some grass. It felt like the game was getting myself to prepare a proper team and learn how the different systems worked.
And then once you go down to the base of the mountain, it felt like the real full game was opening up. I knew how to play, and now I was being given an open area with 3 different goals to go after. I really liked this part, it felt fun exploring, and changing the season to go after different goals. I also appreciated the "help" part of the menu, it was very useful for when I didn't know where to go. It's a simple but very nice addition to the game.

I know some corners of the game were cut, hence the city you can't go to, but I'm glad that you guys still fit in a proper conclusion. I was not expecting the MEGA Raquazza of all things. But thanks to all the tools that the system gives you, I didn't have too much trouble with the fight. I am a bit sad that Castform never really made a proper return and I wonder if you guys had more planned for that. In the intro Castform is compared to a legendary, and then it never really does anything except activate the tablets at the end.

The one very small suggestion I have, that is very much just personal taste, is to maybe make it so that after playing through a full year of seasons, you can just rest and pass time whenever you want instead of having to rebattle a trainer. It just felt a bit tedious when I was at the final parts of the game and needed to skip a few seasons to continue. But yeah it's a very minor thing and I can see some people prefering having to do something to change seasons instead of just having full control.

Really fantastic game. You guys did great!

Hello, thank you for playing. As usual your steam was a good source to fix some little details we missed out.
I completely agree with you about the season cycling and what you propose was the other choice we hesitated with.
In the original plans we had Castform should've had more importance, but we had to change those plans because of the lack of time. Geoswag also put a lot of interactions with your family which would've also made more impact if we had executed the original plan 😃

Your Fire stone hunt was funny because you was close to getting it in several points of the game. IG it could be found in the grotto where you encountered gougheist, but only in summer. And it could also be bought at the Autumnal market at the Sunfall Cove Beach. You were very close to that market at some point, but ended up missing it within one tile xD

As for the Blackglasses it was held by the Pumpkaboo you obtained after beating the fat Gourgheist. I believe Geoswag made it more clear in the new update.

Also, about the Water type Pokémon, only Psyduck and Piplup are obtainable with the grass encounters. The others could be obtained via fishing. The Super Rod is obtained at the Sunfall Cove Beach by beating a Fisherman during the Spring.

For anyone trying to 100% the game, unfortunately I forgot to make Thunder available so it is impossible! Sorry about that!

I will release a fix for that and lots of other bugs once the judging is over.
