Order is born from Chaos, but this is merely the start of its gestation.

Premise:​

The original Xenoverse holds a very special place in my heart, as the first fangame project I have been actively following for years finally coming to fruition. Over the years since its release, me and a lot of other passionate fans have had time to assess this charming, flawed, uneven game, and we felt like it deserved a second shot, to become the best version of itself it could possibly be.

With the formation of Beehive Studios and the former developers moving onto an original IP, our as-of-now-unnamed Team has taken the opportunity, with the permission of said original developers, to retool this game while preserving as much of its original identity as possible.

This is going to be a remake of Xenoverse, using Essentials v21.1, and this demo covers the first couple Gyms of the game, plus a little bit beyond that (everything before the Galvantula Boss + new stuff we added)

Plot Summary:​

Months have gone by after the player character's father, esteemed researcher and family man Versil, was kidnapped by a mysterious figure from his past.
Now his child, Kay or Alice, has set off on a journey across the Eldiw Region to grow strong and find out who has taken their father and why.

In their travels, they fight off invasive X Pokemon from another dimension, the Xenoverse, as they wreak havoc, overtake territory, and endanger the lives of the people all throught the region.
These encounters, however, are often less than spontaneous, as their appearances are tied to the criminal organization called "Team Dimension", the ones responsible for their father's kidnapping, whose ranks are filled by robots instead of people.

Among the many mysteries of the Eldiw Region, the Starter that has chosen Kay/Alice seems to have a connection with the very forces that make up the fabric of reality, which becomes the point of interest for a young and brash cyborg, with a Pokemon who seems to share this connection alongside the Starters.

For those who are familiar with Xenoverse's plot, this doesn't sound too unfamiliar, but the details and the context have been completely overhauled, while keeping the broad strokes of the story and the various set pieces mostly intact. I like to think that all the changes made were for the better, but I require feedback to be certain.

What's new?​

The original Pokemon Xenoverse took place in an original region, featured Fakemon and Mega Evolutions and had a heavy focus on the story. None of this is going to change, but a lot of things around this framework have, and let's start off with a bang with:

Rewrites​

While putting a lot of focus on the story, especially in the later half, this game seems to have never gotten the privilege of a second draft, and all sorts of creative turmoils behind the scenes have led to the overall story feeling very... unfocused and non cohesive.

This is where this whole project started, my rewrites of the story that tried to tie together concepts introduced later into the very start, ensuring a more solid foundation from which the game itself could be built upon in terms of narrative. While the characters will be largely the same, outside of a few exceptions, I hope you find them more fleshed out and compelling than their original counterparts, especially since, as I said, the story is still going to be one of the main focal points of this game.

Re-Balanced​

Many Pokemon from the original game have been rebalanced, that comes with the fangame territory a lot of the time, and some need it more than most (Looks at... all of Gen 2), but usually you don't really need that many powerful Pokemon if the trainers are as easy as they normally are...

But not anymore! Because now the Trainers are (hopefully) gonna pose a real challenge, mostly in the important battles. Said battles are also mostly going to be double battles, as to spice up the gameplay experience, showcase potential strategies that help make bosses stand out from one another and allow more playstyle variety.

Bossfights​


Speaking of battles, however, one of Xenoverse's biggest claims to fame was the X Pokemon Boss Battles, which sees you fighting a Pokemon with boosted stats and multiple health bars, and while that has remained, the boss battle mechanics have been remade to add more variety. You use 2 of your Pokemon to fight 1 Boss, like a reverse Totem Battle, but aside from the Pokemon you fight being stronger, they also possess multiple phases, where upon triggering the phase change all status and stat drops vanish, and something else happens to shake up the battle and make one boss more distinct from another.

When I mean that important trainers and bosses are more powerful, however, I don't just mean their movesets and items (although they are), but they will also, after a certain stage, have fully realised IVs and EVs! Don't panic, because there's two other factors you need to consider:

1) We have a plug in that allows you to customize your own EVs from the very start! The EV Pool scales up with your level, so if you want to, you can try tailoring your mons to your needs.

2) ...A lot of these tougher buffs are reserved for the new Hard mode, and while Normal Mode is also gonna be harder, stuff like EVs and IVs and incredible items and moves is something that will be introduced more gradually later on.

In short, your Pokemon are stronger, your enemies are stronger, and you are gonna have all the tools you need to face them and then some!

Even more Fakemons​

We couldn't resist this one, this is what Pokemon is all about, creating creatures you can play with, and we wanted to stretch our creativity too! We mostly added more regional variants, so as to not leave Eldiwian Meowth completely alone, some Convergent Pokemon because those are just fun to design and come up with, and a few special scrapped Gen 2 Pokemon that have been given new life and new places in the world.

There are plans for more regional forms and some brand new X Species Pokemon too, but those are best for locales that are beyond this demo's reach... for now.

Gotta Catch them All​

Xenoverse's original Pokedex was by no means small, but since this franchise is all about monster collecting, I have decided to expand it even more, but to incentivse the player to actually CATCH the Pokemon, another fangame has shown me how to cater to that design philosophy.

Pokemon Tectonic is a game entirely revolving around catching Pokemon to reap rewards in the form of EXP Candy and other items, so you can get any wild Pokemon into fighting shape (up to a level cap). The feedback loop of catching pokemon to get rewards so you can beat bosses to then unlock the ability to catch more Pokemon to reap more rewards is one that I find to be pretty engaging and satisfying, as such it has been applied to this game, with the addition of it being integrated with the Achievement system of the original Xenoverse too!

Dens​

Dens were a really neat idea, exploring mini dungeons with your Starter to obtain some loot and engage in puzzles really helps both fleshing out both your connection to the Starter the world the Pokemon live in, since it is a den and all.

This game also had some great puzzles... in the postgame. Yeah, it took them time to get good and most of the dens just... aren't. Most of the original dens puzzles rely on trial and error, and all for loot that is not worth it at all.
Well, not anymore! Now there's more loot then ever, the loot is (hopefully) more worthwhile, and the puzzles have been diversified! This demo has 3 real dens to show that off, but there's gonna be way more in the future.

Version 1.0.3 release!​

This version is not purely bug-fixes, but also brings in some rebalances and additions to this first part of the game. These last weeks have been dedicated to understand better the point we're now, and addressing some issues people encountered with our game.

Special rod​


The special rod from Xenoverse was implemented and reworked!
Notable changes:
  • the special rod now has "Modes", which include the option to fish with the normal rod mechanic. Rn only the old rod is available, the good and super will be unlocked later in the game.
  • the rod itself can be upgraded! Magnetism is an attribute that increases how much loot you fish up, and Sensors increase the quality of the loot itself!

In order to obtain the Special Rod, talk with the fisherman at the far right in Stellato Town!

Tweaks to encounter tables​


New encounterable Pokemon:

Chewtle, Shuckle, Chubiburny, Paldean Wooper, Togepi (replacing flabebe in Newtron City), Masgot sound style (replacing Masgot fighting on Stardust Beach), all new mons available from the old rod encounters(Poliwag, Slowpoke, Kidoon, Magikarp, Surskit).
Added some TMs in previous areas of the game.
The Abra den is now accessible!

AUDIO​


Cries added for our fakemon.
X Pokemon Cries got replaced with the Switch version of the OG Pokemon they're based on. This was Sarina's idea, and it actually works well to differentiate X pokemon.
Some Sound effects have been adjusted across the board.

Those can never miss in a game patch.
Lastly, 2 important topics we wanted to discuss.

The level caps​


There has been a lot of debate about this,
We implemented the level caps for… reasons you might not expect.
We know our game sounds like Radical Red but for Xenoverse from the outside, while in actuality we wanted to make everything more "usable", so we had an excuse to make fights more challenging. So routes have more Pokemon variety than the original, and spread across the game.
This, along with rewards like Exp candies to incentivize experimentation, came to the cost of potentially making the game too … easy to walk throught. Nothing wrong with being exploitable, we added some "easy mode" picks that the players can use, if they understand the game. Imagine like Nidoking on Mount Moon. But with a lot of Pokemon, it becomes harder to do damage control.
And it's not just for making the game harder, is about really not being to easy to progress thought, to the point it becomes a cake walk and boring.
However, some people were thrown off by the level caps, because in their opinion, it made the game too "Artificial", while also making fights with trainer pointless beyond the cap.

We can't make a game that is guaranteed to satisfy everyone, but as developers we can think of ways on how to improve our ideas.
We introduced 2 modes, toggleable in the settings: Hard level cap and Soft level cap.
Hard level cap is the standard one, where each Pokemon can't progress pass the level cap. This mode remained unchanged, because it's our original vision and we think the balance was good on this part, however in order to make the level cap not feel entirely like a downside and to avoid skipping trainer battles because would give nothing, we added the Exp Bank feature, accessible through the reward machine.
You can collect a third of the Exp you would have gottten from a trainer battle, which can then be converted into other exp candies.
The rewards have been adjusted to feel balanced, you don't get too many to make the rest of the route reward feel pointless, but at least they're farmable. It's not like you can use them to pump your team to level 80.
And then Soft level cap. In this mode, you get slightly reduced exp once you hit the cap, but you keep progressing past the level cap! The Exp Storage feature is not usable while in this mode, for obvious reasons. Also, exp candies will not apply to Pokemon who crossed the level cap, because they're meant to be used to level underleveled mons.

P.S. you still can't get past level 28. It's still a beta and we don't have all the assets ready.

We'll see how these 2 modes play out, and if they improve the overall experience.
We published this beta to understand what we were doing good and what we were doing bad, and I think this period really was a way to understand things. We may not be perfect, but we'll try to do well.

The difficulty overall​


This section will be short.
While we think that the balancing has been good in this beta, and not even in hard mode there're classing scenarios of "You need this specific team of 6 with these specific moves all with at least 20 IVs across the board to pass this point", Ginger's Normal mode team has been tweaked to be more feasible for casual players, since it has been quite the road block for somebody. So did… the final battle of the demo. No spoiler.
Also from this point on we'll think at the Hard mode teams as "the version we would think is interesting" and Normal mode teams as "The lighter version of that". Which I know sounds a lot like "Taking the Normal mode team and making it harder" but trust me it's different.

Surprisingly this runs quite well on joiplay the only gripe I have is that I haven't found which keybind skips the cut scene that plays when booting up the game.

Edit: I've found 2 problems I guess in the past hour or so 1 being the special effect during the sharpedo fight when it takes a pokemon down to 0 hp it doesn't technically faint until the next turn bit you can't attack or swap it out until said turn. And 2 during the with the 1st fight with the hiker in zero cave when his bergmite used I think it was frost breath it force closed/crashed the game.

Order is born from Chaos, but this is merely the start of its gestation.

Engine: Pokémon Essentials v21.1

Premise:​

The original Xenoverse holds a very special place in my heart, as the first fangame project I have been actively following for years finally coming to fruition. Over the years since its release, me and a lot of other passionate fans have had time to assess this charming, flawed, uneven game, and we felt like it deserved a second shot, to become the best version of itself it could possibly be.

With the formation of Beehive Studios and the former developers moving onto an original IP, our as-of-now-unnamed Team has taken the opportunity, with the permission of said original developers, to retool this game while preserving as much of its original identity as possible.

This is going to be a remake of Xenoverse, using Essentials v21.1, and this demo covers the first couple Gyms of the game, plus a little bit beyond that (everything before the Galvantula Boss + new stuff we added)

Plot Summary:​

Months have gone by after the player character's father, esteemed researcher and family man Versil, was kidnapped by a mysterious figure from his past.
Now his child, Kay or Alice, has set off on a journey across the Eldiw Region to grow strong and find out who has taken their father and why.

In their travels, they fight off invasive X Pokemon from another dimension, the Xenoverse, as they wreak havoc, overtake territory, and endanger the lives of the people all throught the region.
These encounters, however, are often less than spontaneous, as their appearances are tied to the criminal organization called "Team Dimension", the ones responsible for their father's kidnapping, whose ranks are filled by robots instead of people.

Among the many mysteries of the Eldiw Region, the Starter that has chosen Kay/Alice seems to have a connection with the very forces that make up the fabric of reality, which becomes the point of interest for a young and brash cyborg, with a Pokemon who seems to share this connection alongside the Starters.

For those who are familiar with Xenoverse's plot, this doesn't sound too unfamiliar, but the details and the context have been completely overhauled, while keeping the broad strokes of the story and the various set pieces mostly intact. I like to think that all the changes made were for the better, but I require feedback to be certain.

What's new?​

The original Pokemon Xenoverse took place in an original region, featured Fakemon and Mega Evolutions and had a heavy focus on the story. None of this is going to change, but a lot of things around this framework have, and let's start off with a bang with:

Rewrites​

While putting a lot of focus on the story, especially in the later half, this game seems to have never gotten the privilege of a second draft, and all sorts of creative turmoils behind the scenes have led to the overall story feeling very... unfocused and non cohesive.

This is where this whole project started, my rewrites of the story that tried to tie together concepts introduced later into the very start, ensuring a more solid foundation from which the game itself could be built upon in terms of narrative. While the characters will be largely the same, outside of a few exceptions, I hope you find them more fleshed out and compelling than their original counterparts, especially since, as I said, the story is still going to be one of the main focal points of this game.

Re-Balanced​

Many Pokemon from the original game have been rebalanced, that comes with the fangame territory a lot of the time, and some need it more than most (Looks at... all of Gen 2), but usually you don't really need that many powerful Pokemon if the trainers are as easy as they normally are...

But not anymore! Because now the Trainers are (hopefully) gonna pose a real challenge, mostly in the important battles. Said battles are also mostly going to be double battles, as to spice up the gameplay experience, showcase potential strategies that help make bosses stand out from one another and allow more playstyle variety.

Bossfights​


Speaking of battles, however, one of Xenoverse's biggest claims to fame was the X Pokemon Boss Battles, which sees you fighting a Pokemon with boosted stats and multiple health bars, and while that has remained, the boss battle mechanics have been remade to add more variety. You use 2 of your Pokemon to fight 1 Boss, like a reverse Totem Battle, but aside from the Pokemon you fight being stronger, they also possess multiple phases, where upon triggering the phase change all status and stat drops vanish, and something else happens to shake up the battle and make one boss more distinct from another.

When I mean that important trainers and bosses are more powerful, however, I don't just mean their movesets and items (although they are), but they will also, after a certain stage, have fully realised IVs and EVs! Don't panic, because there's two other factors you need to consider:

1) We have a plug in that allows you to customize your own EVs from the very start! The EV Pool scales up with your level, so if you want to, you can try tailoring your mons to your needs.

2) ...A lot of these tougher buffs are reserved for the new Hard mode, and while Normal Mode is also gonna be harder, stuff like EVs and IVs and incredible items and moves is something that will be introduced more gradually later on.

In short, your Pokemon are stronger, your enemies are stronger, and you are gonna have all the tools you need to face them and then some!

Even more Fakemons​

We couldn't resist this one, this is what Pokemon is all about, creating creatures you can play with, and we wanted to stretch our creativity too! We mostly added more regional variants, so as to not leave Eldiwian Meowth completely alone, some Convergent Pokemon because those are just fun to design and come up with, and a few special scrapped Gen 2 Pokemon that have been given new life and new places in the world.

There are plans for more regional forms and some brand new X Species Pokemon too, but those are best for locales that are beyond this demo's reach... for now.

Gotta Catch them All​

Xenoverse's original Pokedex was by no means small, but since this franchise is all about monster collecting, I have decided to expand it even more, but to incentivse the player to actually CATCH the Pokemon, another fangame has shown me how to cater to that design philosophy.

Pokemon Tectonic is a game entirely revolving around catching Pokemon to reap rewards in the form of EXP Candy and other items, so you can get any wild Pokemon into fighting shape (up to a level cap). The feedback loop of catching pokemon to get rewards so you can beat bosses to then unlock the ability to catch more Pokemon to reap more rewards is one that I find to be pretty engaging and satisfying, as such it has been applied to this game, with the addition of it being integrated with the Achievement system of the original Xenoverse too!

Dens​

Dens were a really neat idea, exploring mini dungeons with your Starter to obtain some loot and engage in puzzles really helps both fleshing out both your connection to the Starter the world the Pokemon live in, since it is a den and all.

This game also had some great puzzles... in the postgame. Yeah, it took them time to get good and most of the dens just... aren't. Most of the original dens puzzles rely on trial and error, and all for loot that is not worth it at all.
Well, not anymore! Now there's more loot then ever, the loot is (hopefully) more worthwhile, and the puzzles have been diversified! This demo has 3 real dens to show that off, but there's gonna be way more in the future.
