Welcome to the celestial land of Tenno! Known for its futuristic technology and advanced space program, the Tenno Region thrives thanks to the ambitions and benevolence of Team Planetary, an organization dedicated to the region's betterment. You start your Pokémon journey in the Tenno Region like many other trainers, but soon you and your childhood friend/rival witness a more sinister side of Team Planetary. They steal property and take Pokémon, all supposedly in the name of saving the region. Can the ends justify the means? As the only witnesses to these heinous acts in a region that idolizes the villains, it’s up to you to stop them while striving to become the Tenno Champion. Blast off on an out-of-this-world journey of astronomical proportions!
sol-version-switch-2-cover-2.png
Pokémon Sol Version is a fan project that aims to create a traditional Pokémon experience using Pokémon Essentials on RPG Maker XP. It is a part of the Cosmic Quest Project, and is technically the "third version" to the hypothetical Luna and Terra Versions. Currently released is a work-in-progress beta test/demo. What's a beta/demo? I explain in detail here. The main campaign is essentially complete and you can play the entire story up until the credits roll, but there is currently no post-game content. That will come in future updates, as discussed here. But, feel free to keep on exploring the region and completing missed optional content until then.

Important Notes
  • This game is in beta and is an unfinished product. While playing, expect to encounter glitches and game crashes. If you do, please report them, as explained in the "Reporting Issues" section below.
  • Due to the chances of encountering a game crash, I recommend saving your game frequently, especially before and after difficult or important battles or after long story events.
  • The game is essentially complete up until the credits roll. That means you can play the entire main story, but there are no post-game elements added yet. Future updates to come.
  • This game is designed to be a traditional and authentic Pokémon experience. It will not contain features common to fan games, such as a speed-up button.
  • This game is designed to play more like the earlier Pokémon games (Gens I through V), rather than the more modern ones. As such, it may require more effort and thought to beat than you might be used to from modern Pokémon games.
  • The game features the classic version of Exp. Share, rather than the modern version which distributes experience among all Pokémon in the party automatically. An Exp. All item, which functions like the modern Exp. Share, does exist in the game, but it is a reward for a side quest that spans the entire region and cannot be obtained until the very end of the game. It is better to think of it as a post-game item.
  • One aspect of real Pokémon games that could not be replicated by this game is interactions with other players. This means it would usually be impossible to evolve Pokémon that require being traded. However, if you want to evolve such a Pokémon, just show a Pokémon that evolves through trade to the woman on the second floor of any Pokémon Center and she'll give you a special item that can evolve these Pokémon instead.
  • Certain aspects of this game may be incompatible with JoiPlay. I have received reports of graphic display issues, random lag, and missing sound effects, all coming from JoiPlay, rather than any specific issue with the game.
  • JoiPlay prevents players from skipping the opening movie. Players using JoiPlay should either delete or rename the folder titled "Movies" within their "Pokémon Sol Version" folder. This will cause the game to automatically skip the movie. This will have to be done every time the game is updated.

Download v0.1.8 Here
(Updated 11/3/25)
No Hotfix Currently Required

If you need help getting things working after downloading from this link, see here for instructions. Once you've downloaded the most recent version, apply the the most recent hotfix (if applicable) as explained below.

Update Instructions: If you've already downloaded an older version of Sol Version and are looking to update, simply delete your outdated "Pokémon Sol Version" folder and download the current version from the above link. Your save data will transfer over automatically.
Hotfix Instructions: If and only if there's a hotfix download link listed below the regular download link, then you'll need to apply the hotfix to Sol Version to play the most up-to-date version. Click the link to download a file called "Game.rgssad" and move that file into your "Pokémon Sol Version" folder. When it asks you if you want to replace the existing file, say yes. Now your game is up to date. You should always try to have to most recent hotfix applied to your game. If you've just installed Sol Version for the first time and a hotfix is available, you should apply the hotfix right away.

Reporting Issues
As this is a work-in-progress beta build of the game, expect to find glitches and other issues. Please report any issues you come across while playing. You can report them here, or send me an email at CosmicQuestProject@gmail.com. As much information as you can provide on the context of the issue, as well as screenshots if possible, is very helpful. If there's an error message, a picture or copy of the exact message would be of great assistance. The game's error log, with a list of all error messages you've received can be located in your file explorer under Users>[Your Name]>AppData>Roaming>Pokémon Sol Version. AppData is only visible if you first click the "View" tab, and then check the box labeled "Hidden Items." From there, you can copy and paste the exact error message, with the newest errors on the bottom. It is my hope that working together we can remove all of the issues that remain undiscovered in this game and we can move it ever closer to a final release.

Known Issues
  • Sometimes when an ability's name displays in battle, it will instead display the name of the Pokémon's other ability. This is a purely visual bug. The proper ability is still activating.
  • Sometimes the game will crash when transitioning from the opening movie to the title screen. If this happens, you can simply relaunch the game and skip the movie to circumvent the crash.
  • A handful of Tenno Pokémon are still a work in progress and do not yet have certain graphics. For a complete list of Pokémon missing some or all of their graphics, see here.
  • Any Mega Evolved Pokémon not listed here is not yet available in the game, even if a Mega Stone is obtainable. The Mega Stone is a placeholder and will not work.

Thanks for letting me know. I thought I had accounted for that, but I guess not. That will be fixed in the next update for sure.

Tell me, have you saved your game like this, so you're stuck in this state? Or did you escape it by leaving the game without saving?
I saved but I did eventually figure out a way to get off the pokemon. Had to go back into the mud and then try and get out of the mud prompting it to ask me to ride the pokemon then I flew out and went back to the mud and repeated and was finally able to get off it.

Other than that bug I reported I do really like this game. The beginning felt a little weird difficulty wise but once I got past Canaveral City things balanced out. I do suggest opening up the Department Store in Canaveral City and just limiting it to the first floor until later in the story though. It was a big pain having to walk all the way back and take the ferry if I needed to buy items.

Before I make my post I have, I'd like to make a request.

Please do not post any Legends: Z-A spoilers on this thread!

I would like the chance to play the game without any spoilers (that means both story spoilers and new, unannounced Mega Evolutions). If you have any questions about how So Version will adopt new aspects of Z-A, I promise that I will address any and all questions once I've gotten the chance to complete the game.

Now, moving on to the news for the day.

Hailfire Sprite:

Hailfire now has its sprite made. It will be added to Sol Version in the next update.

Thanks for the feedback. I do like the idea of limiting it to the first floor when you're first in Kanaveral. I had it closed because it felt too early to have access to the Department Store, but Kanaveral City is the obvious place to have the store located. But having only the first floor open initially would be a good way to balance that.

Legends: Z-A Tie-In Mystery Gift

Sol Version is having its first limited-run special Mystery Gift distribution! To celebrate the release of Legends: Z-A, grab Hawlucha, a Pokémon not normally found in the Tenno Region! Plus, stay tuned for a future Mystery Gift distribution that will give away Hawluchanite to allow you to Mega Evolve this Hawlucha! This limited-time distribution only lasts two weeks. Grab it before October 30th! This special secondary Mystery Gift will run alongside the primary Pumpkaboo distribution.

I've got another new sprite to add to the next Sol Version update. This time it's for Tennoan Muk.

tennoan-muk-3.png

(I posted this one with a transparent background so its glow effect could be seen more easily, but it's worth noting that it looks better against a non-solid background, so its glow will look better in-game)

Happy Halloween, everyone! Let's celebrate this spooky day with a creepy Pokémon! Here's Scarachnid's sprite:

scarachnid.png

As always, this sprite will be added to Sol Version in the upcoming update. Stay tuned for more information soon.

Also, as a reminder, the Halloween Pumpkaboo Mystery Gift is only available until November 3rd at 11:59 PST. Grab it while you can. And stay tuned for information on the next Mystery Gift distribution.

v0.1.8 Update: Legends: Z-A Content:

Minor Spoilers Ahead for Legends: Z-A

Legends: Z-A has been out for just over two weeks now, and it's time for Sol Version to get its first update with content to come from a game launched after it did.

Z-A added seven Mega Evolutions in total for Pokémon that already existed: Clefable, Starmie, Dragonite, Froslass, Pyroar, Barbaracle, and Malamar. All seven of these new Mega Evolutions have now been fully added to Sol Version. Their Mega Stones have been added to the world for you to hunt down. If you don't feel like searching the entire region again, but want the new Mega Stones you've now missed, check out Sol Version's new Guides page for a list of locations. As these Pokémon are still brand new, there hasn't really been the time for anything but their front sprites to be made, so these Mega Evolutions will only have a front sprite, no back or party preview sprites for now. Once said sprites are available, they'll be added to Sol Version in a future update.

Since Z-A doesn't have abilities, we actually have no idea what abilities these new Mega Evolutions get, so I had to get a little creative with some placeholder abilities. These are my best guesses towards what the ability might be and will be replaced with the actual abilities once we learn what they are in the future. Mega Clefable will get Aerilate, as, similar to Mega Pinsir, it doesn't have access to much in the way of Flying-Type moves naturally. Mega Dragonite Y will get Multiscale, gaining access to its signature Hidden Ability without actually needing the Hidden Ability to start. Mega Froslass is getting Snow Warning, as its already a Pokémon themed around snow, and its ability to lower the air temperature enough to even freeze flames seems like a reasonable way to summon Snow on command. Mega Pyroar gets Intimidate, because that extra large main would be used for intimidation in the wild. Both Barbaracle and Malamar already have good, Mega-level abilities with Tough Claws and Contrary, so those will be their abilities as Mega Evolutions. Finally, of note, we actually might know what Mega Starmie's ability is already. While all Mega Evolved Pokémon typically get 100 additional stat points from their base form, Mega Starmie actually gets 140. This lines up with Mega Medicham and Mega Mawile, which both got an additional 40 extra stats in Attack in this game compared to previous games. The reason for this is almost certainly because they're lacking their abilities Pure Power and Huge Power, which increases their attack stat. This implies Mega Starmie will also have one of these abilities. So, I've decreased Mega Starmie's Attack by 40 points, but given it the Pure Power ability.

Now, to address the elephant in the room. Mega Dragonite. I have come to the decision that my version of Mega Dragonite and the official version of Mega Dragonite are different enough that they can coexist as X and Y Mega variants. From this point forward, my Mega Dragonite shall be known as Mega Dragonite X and the official one will be known as Mega Dragonite Y. Does it make sense for an X and Y pair of Megas to be introduced in separate releases? Probably not, but it's also not really a continuity issue either.

To go off on a tangent, I'm somewhat surprised that this only happened with Mega Dragonite (at least until Mega Raichu arrives with the DLC, more on that to come), But the real landmine I avoided was them making a Mega Evolution of a Pokémon I've created a regular evolution for. When we saw Corbeau using Arbok in one of the trailers for the game, I thought for sure it was going to be his ace Pokémon, and he would have a Mega Arbok. That would have made thigs incredibly awkward for Repiv, especially because Repiv was an important Pokémon used by an important character in Cosmic Quest, making it next to impossible to simply remove from my continuity like I did with Guilloking or Mega Duraludon. We'll see if I continue to dodge that bullet with the DLC's wave of new Mega Evolutions.

On a lesser note, I've always taken feedback about the Den of Mega Evolution into account and have made a tweak so that most Mega Sludge enemies will not respawn after they've been defeated once. Certain ones still will, in order to stop rooms from being empty and to provide some sort of opponent once you've cleared out everything else, but most will not. However, some specific rooms will still have all of them respawn for mechanical reasons.

Also, I've removed Mega Metagross from the pool of Pokémon that the sludge could transform into. It was probably the most annoying of them all to have to fight, and it's a Mega Evolution that isn't even obtainable in Sol Version's main story, unlike all the others the sludge can turn into. It has been replaced by Mega Malamar to get some representation of Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions.

Changelog:
  • Added the Mega Evolutions from Legends: Z-A of Pokémon that already exist in Sol Version. Note that back sprites and party preview sprites of these Mega Evolved Pokémon have not yet been made, so they will only have front sprite available for now.
  • Placed the corresponding Mega Stones to be found across the region.
  • Changed my version of Mega Dragonite into Mega Dragonite X. The official Mega Dragonite has been renamed as Mega Dragonite Y. The Dragotite Mega Stone has had its name updated to Dragoninite X.
  • Added the front sprites for Hailfire, Tennoan Muk, and Scarachnid. Tennoan Muk and Scarachnid also had their party preview sprites added.
  • Adjusted the Den of Mega Evolution so that most Mega Sludge will not reappear after being defeated for the first time.
  • Replaced Mega Metagross with Mega Malamar as a possible Mega Sludge opponent in the Den of Mega Evolution.
  • Fixed a glitch that would allow players to use Fly in locations and at time which it shouldn't have been allowed, such as while using Terrain Trek, leading to unintended behaviors.
  • Added summary screen sprites for the Mega and Cosmic Balls.
  • Fixed and adjusted the animation of Antigravity.
  • Preparation for the next Mystery Gift.

Mystery Gift:

Beginning November 4th, with no time gates, online subscriptions, or the chore of ranking up in online battles needed, Sol Version's next Mystery Gift is the Kalos Starters holding their respective Mega Stones! For most, this will be your first chance to use Mega Greninja and Delphox, and, as it hasn't even released in Z-A yet, it's everyone's first chance at Mega Chesnaught! This three-in-one Mystery Gift gives everyone the chance to use these new Mega Evolved Pokémon! You Must Update Your Game to v0.1.8 before claiming this gift.

But that's not all!

To accompany the Z-A launch tie-in Hawlucha distribution, for two weeks only, you can grab yourself the Hawluchanite via Mystery Gift to Mega Evolve that Hawlucha! You Must Update Your Game to v0.1.8 before claiming this gift.

Edit:
The new Mystery Gifts are now online.
