I've been playing around with Pokemon essentials for some time now and have figured quite some things out that gave problems in the past. My goal is to make Kanto in HGSS style with a national pokedex of my favorite pokemon and a lot of quality of life changes. In this thread I want to document all my steps. The first reason being so I can look back if I forgot how to do something, but more important to help a lot of other beginner creators who might run into the same problems as me.
If you have any questions about what I've already done then let me know. If I have a problem I will place it on the bottom of the thread. If you know a solution then please help me out.
Step 1 - getting started.
- I am building on mac so I downloaded Whisky to emulate windows.
- Second I downloaded Steam (took me a while to get it working. I had to chance the windows version in whisky a couple of times before I got it to work. I believe I'm on windows 8.
- I purchased RPG maker XP which was on sale for less than 2 euros.
- I downloaded Pokemon Essentials V21.1 and installed the hotfixes. https://eeveeexpo.com/essentials/news/
Step 2 - setting things up for HGSS
- I first installed the Delta Speed Up plugin. This is useful to use during testing. In the script I changed the speed to 1x, 3x and 10x (Credits = Marin (og speed up script), Phantombass (19.1 version), Mashirosakura, Golisopod User, D0vid (v21.1 version), Manurocker95(bug fixes))
- I have downloaded Pixelorama to edit the tilesets
- I have downloaded the HGSS sprites from SirMalo and made 2 actual tilesets out of them. 1 for routes and 1 for citys. Since Pixelorama's max hight of the tileset is around 16000 pixels I can't include all buildings etc on these tilesets, but if needed I can create another tileset for specific cities.
- Next I editet the door animation for the pokemon center so it actualy fits nicely in the door of the pc when the image is used on an event. (I have to edit all the other doors as well since you have to scale all the images from SirMalo to 2 times the normal size, else it won't work.
Step 3 - Pokemon Zero
- I have downloaded Pokemon Zero (https://eeveeexpo.com/threads/1477/). it is a working version of Kanto but in gen 3 style. The only problem I have is that this game lags a lot on my mac when in the overworld. In the maps I created myself it all runs smooth. Could be I will run into the same issue on maps where I will need a lot of events but I have to see that in the future. Now Pokemon Zero is created on essentials V19 so I can't copy any events since the scripts are different etc. But I can use all the maps as a blueprint to build on, which will hopefully save time.
