PKMN: THE CANINE ISLANDS

SSpbOTy.png

THE CANINE ISLANDS is a remote chain of sparsely populated islands where humans try to live in harmony with wild Pokemon. Catching wild pokemon is forbidden, and pokeballs are not for sale. Engage with tight challenges and conquer the ISLAND MASTERS through gifts, eggs, and maybe even a game corner.

Features the BATTLE BASE, a Battle-Factory-Esque challenge where you will construct a team out of pre-prepared pokemon, fight through an onslaught of elite trainers, and even get to keep one of your draft pokemon to add to your party permanently!

PROF. TITUS, your father, is a champion DOG POKEMON breeder, who sets you up for success with your choice of SNUBBUL, HOUNDOUR, & ELECTRIKE for a starter. But that won't be the only time you're faced with a decision in your drafting, since many other characters along the way will offer you their own choice-of-three according to their own specialties!

Thwart TEAM MEOW, a "criminal" organization who stand in defiance of the islands' culture, and are out to hunt and catch as many wild pokemon as they can get their paws on. Become a giant kaiju and stomp around a city! Solve the mystery of the WING MONKS and the mysterious masked figure haunting their monastery. Find out who is waiting for you at the ST. LOUISE LIGHTHOUSE, the champion you never got to know.

Lovingly made in complete accuracy to the GBC palette and Gen 2's artstyle, featuring many handmade locales, unique trainer sprites, and some heavy-metal chiptunes that you never thought a gameboy was capable of.

Dive in, and tell me what you think!

Hello! I've been playing the game, and I'm really enjoying it (I'm at the first battle base challenge). I love the ideia of only being able to add a limited number of Pokémon to your team, it makes the game really unique!

However, I did get softlocked twice in my time of playing:
-The first time was at the Team Meow base, when you battle Jessie an James. I went directly to talk to boss, Jessie appeared, but James didn't, and I couldn't move. I'm not sure what caused this, since when I tried it again, it worked (If it helps, my team at the time was Snubbul, Wishiwashi and Ralts)
-The second time was at the battle base. At the right side of the building, there's two NPCs behind a counter, one looking forward and other looking to the right. I talked to one of them through the counter (the one looking right), and they said "Looks like you have 1 badge. You'll be facing down challenge 1. Good luck!" and my character tries to walk forward, but ends up hitting the counter, so I get stuck trying to walk forward.

Some other things I think are of note are:
One of the Pokéfans in the forest at Zephyr Island changes sprites after you beat them, it's the one with the Emolga, I think.
Team Rocket felt like a weird bump in difficulty, and I felt like it's too much of a counter to the Pokémon I picked (Snubbul, Wishiwashi, Ralts). This wouldn't normally be a problem, but with such limited Pokémona available, I feel like it should be balanced around it a bit better.

Overall, softlockes aside, I can't wait to continue playing the game, the team has done a great job!

Updated to the "Rock Smash Patch" which includes many hopeful fixes for softlocks people were having. :borf:

Sorry i am late to finish this fangame too but i have finished this game the music and pokemons are so lovely and cute
i enjoy my time while playing this game too!!

Hello, I finished you game this morning.
I was looking forward to try it as I followed your daily devlog in the Discord during the jam and I have not been disappointed by what I played.

First of all, I saw that you updated the game this morning, but unfortunately I missed out that message and played on the older version. So some points (especially the bugs) might be outdated, but I am putting them just in case you've missed them.

Your new gym system was very original and worked out very well.
The music choice is very good.
I absolutely loved every soundtracks which were associated with the team Meow. Whoever made them did a very nice job.
The secret Pokémon was very well placed and helped me a lot during the boss fight that came just after obtaining it.

The second gym's puzzle was very original and cool.
I don't recall seeing such a thing in any other Pokémon fangame.

The interpretation of the theme with the drafting system is very well thought.

Here are some nipticks I noted:

I can see black border on some maps (ex: At the right part of St Louis entrance map where you only have two tiles of water instead of five)
  • I chose Snubbull as my starter and started breezing through the game after the Meow team's base (and until the very last fight) without even using any candies. Not sure if it's because I got lucky on the drafted Pokémon and other aspects or if it's a real balancing issue though.
  • My Wooper was useless for the first gym because he only knew Mud Shot at that point. Generally, he was very useless during a good portion of the game, because the second damaging move he learns is Slam which is a very bad move and the first Water type move I thought him is Surf that I obtained from my rival.
  • Maybe that's too much week, but I feel like the Pokémon I draft should influence a little bit the Champion's team. Because currentely, if I draft the wrong Pokémon, she can easily wipe me out with her Noivern which feels a little bit unfair.
I don't know if it's because of a lack of time, but I feel like a proper epilogue is missing after the Champion fight. For instance, my mom says she will try reunite with the preofessor, but when I return home to see what happened, the professor is still repeating the same dialogue line as before. Same for the first gym leader which acts like I haven't beaten the champion yet.

Some story points seems a bit obscre/unfinished also. I never heard back of the Entei or the Dark Lugia for example.
  • Some drafted Pokémon's ability doesn't match with what was written on their description (ex: Krokorok with Anger Point instead of Intimidate).
  • Weavile's Beat Up is broken.
  • Some of the Pokémon i've given choice with at the end of first battle base doesn't match the ones I choose (I got Skarmory, Sylveon, Monferno and Weavile while I chose Monferno, Weavile, Krookorok and Roserade).
  • Shadow Lugia only uses Struggle.
  • "Hey kid, you only have one badge" message trigers when I go in with Tyranitar despite me having 2 badges.
  • If I black out against the champion and return to the room where I choose my Pokémon, the stair is already here, which allows me to go fight her with my original team instead of the drafted Pokémon.
  • To complete the previous point, I cannot use the previously drafted Pokémon again because their Pokéball is no more here on the choosing room.

Here is my final team:

Overall, this is a solid game and I enjoyed playing it.
My only complaint is the fact that some things seemed unfinished, but I understand that the 40 day limit is a little bit brutal. My first ever jam game also had some unfinished points because of me being too ambitious 😂
If I remember correctely, it was your first time using Essentials, but I couldn't have guessed it by playing the game alone, because most of the things you implemented worked as intented :)
I saw an NPC which was worried about your devlogs being annoying, but that wasn't the case for me. Was very exciting to follow and hope more devs do that for the future jams.

Hey, thanks so much for playing and for the detailed feedback! Yes indeed most of those issues were addressed by the last patch we were able to put out, the UPDATE DEADLINE ZIP (now linked in the original post instead of the old version).

The storyline with the legendaries and the island masters was indeed cut down to it's bare essentials just due to scope and time, but I hope the game was enjoyable even despite that! I still think the encounter with team meow and challenging the player internally whether or not to use the pokeball was something pretty cool we managed to pull off.

If you have a game you and your team put out for the jam, throw a link in here or to me on discord and I'll play yours in kind 😄
